escape
refuge, exodus, flight. often considered in solely negative or pejorative terms. this is the case, for instance, in “escapism”; running away while keeping structural problems intact, possibly also leaving others to clean up the mess. escape, however, can also be a highly necessary (re-)generative moment, crucial not only for self-preservation but also for a larger project of working toward more agency. consider, for example, the case of a worker “taking five” (or fifteen) in a bathroom – temporarily making it a room of one’s own, perhaps a form of soft boycott? it may not be not enough, but the bathroom may also be the only way to escape from a situation of permanent control and command, and therefore also the only way to cope with it.
