procrastination
or what it sometimes feels like we are doing when we are supposedly not hard enough at work. this is not to say there is no such thing as procrastination, but nonetheless the feeling of guilt many of us have when we are not performing, not being productive, is a tell-tale sign of how we have internalized certain pressures, certain anxieties. what would it mean to think of procrastination as an integral and more or less unavoidable part of what work is? would we not be doing ourselves a great favor? (there is not enough free time for most of us, so maybe at the very least learn to enjoy our procrastination.) the fact that those whose job is different from domestic work will likely consider something like doing the dishes as a form of procrastination says a lot about what is considered and valued as work and what is not.
