vanity
these images reveal playful performances, self-indulgence and even the fetishism of “domestic life”. the “vanity” tag comes out of a heated discussion about a seeming lack of “politicization” in the individual-centered images not interested in joining our imagined domestic photographer collectivity. the question of external judgment and the ethics of participatory and collective work is thus raised. is the current bilderkritik group entitled to make such a critique of these images? what’s the agency of this critique? other bilderkritik groups may argue against our judgments and criteria: “are they really too shallow to be domestic worker photographers?” aren’t such images pointing to another element of desire we might have missed in our politically-instrumentalizing analysis?
