land-escape
with growing urbanization spreading all over the globe, the rural, the countryside, increasingly functions on the basis that it is not the city, not where we live, not our home. more and more the countryside is becoming defined as a means of escaping the grind of our everyday lives, as a means of getting away – land-escape. in many ways, this is understandable: rising rent prices are driving some city-dwellers to the countryside, which offers not only cheaper real estate but also a slower general pace of life, a possibility for deceleration. on the other hand, the land is becoming exoticized. in looking at the land in this way, we tend to forget that this huge hinterland functions as the agricultural production site that sustains city life. the countryside may appear “good as empty” in the eyes of city-dwellers, but of course people do also live and labor here; for them, of course, the land is no escape, but is home.
