refusal
“i would prefer not to”. this adage by writer herman melville’s bartleby the scrivener has become increasingly popular over the years, something of an icon of refusal as resistance – although his form of resistance ends quite tragically. interestingly, the moment when bartleby’s boss in the novella becomes really worried is when he notices that bartleby no longer goes home, that he has made his working space his living space. in that sense, too, bartleby prefigures many of us for whom living and working environments have collided – and for whom this may cause psychological complications of all sorts.
